Our weekend getaway stemmed from David getting me two nights in the Dome from Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort for my Birthday and quickly evolved into a busy but relaxing getaway. I have been to Cape Breton many times before, but hadn’t done the Cabot Trail since I was a kid.

The Dome’s at Cabot Shores are awesome – they are made of thick plastic, and the clear plastic can be mistaken as glass it is so clear.

We were in the Beaver Dome which was the most secluded, had water on one side and the ocean in the distance on another so the natural white noise was lovely. One night it poured and was so soothing.

The Resort had a small “Ferry” to the beach, which was a simple pull boat, and we were on our way to the rock beach.

The beach was looking out on the North Atlantic Ocean, and was quite beautiful even in the clouds. The next land mass would be Newfoundland.

We then found drift wood and decided to bring some home to do some arts and crafts – we’ll see how it turns out!

After our quick beach stop we were on the way to dinner in the lounge that had an incredible little restaurant. The food was excellent!

After dinner we had ordered a Cedar Hot Tub – and it was heavenly. We stayed in there for over an hour while playing games and truly accepting the “wilderness”.

The next morning we got up and started along the Cabot Trail – First stop a quick visit to Cape Smokey. As you can tell from the photos, it is smokey/foggy, but still is beautiful!

We then took the recommendation of one of the owners of the Resort and decided to do the Middle Head Trail. It was stunning!

The trail had roots and rocks, but over all was very well maintained – there were significant hills, our day ended at climbing 40+ floors – so keep that in mind before you head out to Middle Head Trail.

Naturally if I can get close to a ledge, I was going to – David is a little less likely to go down close to a cliff, but still go a cool photo.

The views everywhere are beautiful! Just look:

You then take another path back to your car, which comes out at Keltic Lodge, and it was a beautiful hike.

After that we had lunch at Main Street Restaurant that was delicious and then headed towards Black Brook Falls.

We parked before the beach, but had a nice walk over to the Falls – although there is a closer parking lot. These waterfalls were awesome and it was very easy to climb very close to them.

I love getting as close as I can to the water and Black Brook certainly catered to that. Also at the top of the falls there was a beautiful red Adirondack chair which just let you relax and listen to the water flowing.

Of course the Cabot Trail is a National Park – so every once in a while you get the beaver national parks logo as a reminder – these were new bridges built in 2016 for the anniversary year!

We then started around the Cabot Trail – which has a lot of view points. Some with just vast of green trees:

Some with hills, valleys, and trees others with trees and water views:

And my favorite – some views along the Cabot Trail of winding roads in the distance with the highlands, green trees and beautiful ocean:

It was a touch cold the day we did it, but the beautiful clouds made for great pictures. Selfies too – of course happen too!

After we went through the Cabot Trail we stopped in Baddeck for dinner and then went back to our Dome for a cute concert in the lounge. It was a great time at Cabot Shores Wilderness Resort.

The next morning we packed up and made a few stops to some local watering holes in Cape Breton. First up Big Spruce Brewing – which was amazing!

The next stop was Glenora Distillery which was in a beautiful location.

We tried a flight of whisky’s and we have to say we are not whisky drinkers, but I think whisky fans would LOVE this place. 🙂

That’s all for Cape Breton this time! Hope you enjoyed, and started planning your adventure.
